1. Shahadah: This pillar represents the declaration of faith in Islam, affirming the belief in the Oneness of God (Allah) and the acceptance of Muhammad as the final messenger of God. Expressed in the Arabic phrase “La ilaha illallah, Muhammadur rasulullah” (“There is no god but Allah, and Muhammad is the messenger of Allah”), Shahadah serves as the core expression of the Muslim belief.
2. Salah: Salah, or the ritual prayer, is a fundamental aspect of Islamic worship. Muslims are required to perform five prayers daily, known as Fajr (at sunrise), Dhuhr (at noon), Asr (in the afternoon), Maghrib (at sunset), and Isha (in the evening). These prayers serve as opportunities for spiritual connection and reflection throughout the day.
3. Zakat: Zakat, or almsgiving, is the practice of donating a portion of one’s wealth to those in need. 4. Sawm: Sawm refers to fasting during the Islamic month of Ramadan, where Muslims abstain from food, drink, and other physical needs from dawn until sunset. This act of self-discipline and purification allows individuals to focus on spiritual growth, empathy for the less fortunate, and self-restraint from worldly desires.
5. Hajj: The Hajj is a pilgrimage to the holy city of Mecca, an obligation for every able-bodied and financially capable Muslim at least once in their lifetime. Taking place during the Islamic month of Dhu al-Hijjah, the Hajj involves specific rituals and rites performed at sacred sites in Mecca, symbolizing unity, equality, and submission to God.
