What Are WH Questions? (Quick Recap)
WH questions are inquiries that begin with question words like who, what, where, when, why, and how. They are used to gather specific information about people, things, places, time, reasons, or methods.
Unlike yes/no questions, WH questions require detailed answers rather than a simple “yes” or “no.”
Here is a table summarizing all the WH question words:
| WH Question Word | Purpose | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Who | Asking about a person | Who is calling you? |
| What | Asking about a thing | What is your favorite color? |
| Where | Asking about a place | Where do you live? |
| When | Asking about time | When is the meeting? |
| Why | Asking for a reason | Why are you late? |
| How | Asking about a method | How do you get to work? |
| Which | Asking for a choice | Which book do you prefer? |
| Whose | Asking about ownership | Whose jacket is this? |
| Whom | Asking about a person (formal) | Whom did you invite? |
