Rio De Janeiro Olympic Games

The 2016 Summer Olympics, officially known as the Games of the XXXI Olympiad and branded as Rio 2016, were held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, from August 5 to 21, 2016, with some events starting on August 3. Rio was chosen as the host city on October 2, 2009, in Copenhagen.

The Games featured 11,238 athletes from 207 nations, including first-time participants Kosovo, South Sudan, and the Refugee Olympic Team. With 306 medal events across 28 sports, including newly added rugby sevens and golf, competitions were held at 33 venues in Rio and five other Brazilian cities.

These Olympics were the first in South America, the first in a Portuguese-speaking country, the first held entirely in the host country’s winter, and the first in the Southern Hemisphere since 2000. It was also the first Summer Olympics under IOC President Thomas Bach.
