What Is the Simple Past Tense?
The simple past tense (also called the past simple or preterite) is used to describe completed actions or events that happened in the past.

How to Form the Simple Past Tense
Regular Verbs
Add –ed to the base form of the verb.
play → played

Irregular Verbs
Change the verb form completely.

Negatives and Questions
Use the auxiliary verb did:
- Negative → did not (didn’t) + base verb
- Question → Did + subject + base verb?
